About Me

Connecting Numbers to Real-World Challenges

My name is Arsh Shah, and I strive to connect STEM with civic engagement and solutions for homelessness.

In my early years, I focused intensely on mathematics, physics, and computer science, earning awards and pursuing advanced coursework. Yet, despite these accomplishments, I felt that something was missing. Without a purpose for the tools I had learnt, they felt empty. A personal experience with a close friend facing homelessness reframed how I viewed the purpose of my skills.

To bridge knowledge with impact, I began studying political science at UC Santa Barbara, where I explored how policy decisions affect communities. Over the summer, I worked with Fremont for Everyone to understand and respond to a proposed city council camping ban. This inspired me to found the Civics Club and a local branch of Poverty PatchUp, empowering students to engage with community issues and policy.

I also organized events to raise awareness and support for unhoused individuals, including translating speeches from Spanish-speaking community members and leading clothing drives. Debate tournaments became a space for me to refine my voice, while speaking at city council meetings and meeting directly with leaders such as Mayor Raj Salwan and Vice Mayor Teresa Keng gave me a platform to advocate for change. Even after the camping ban passed, I partnered with the ACLU to continue challenging it.

At the same time, I began integrating my technical background into social research. I collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu on designing low-cost prosthetics and worked with the University of Albany to study the connection between gas stations, poverty, and homelessness.

Today, my work lies at the intersection of data, innovation, and humanity—whether through academic research, community advocacy, or technological design. This blog reflects that journey, offering insights on how logic and compassion can work together to address society’s most urgent challenges.
